Amazon (AWS) Launches Nova AI Models, Expanding Generative Capabilities

Amazon has introduced a new series of artificial intelligence (AI) foundational models named “Nova,” which will join the Amazon Bedrock model collection on AWS.

Key Points

Amazon has unveiled three “understanding” models:

1. Amazon Nova Micro: A text model tailored for speed and cost-efficiency, with a context length of 128K tokens, suitable for text summarization, translation, interactive chat, as well as basic mathematical reasoning and coding.

    2. Amazon Nova Lite: A “very low-cost” multimodal model capable of managing real-time customer interactions, document analysis, and visual question-answering tasks.

It can process inputs up to 300K tokens and analyze multiple images or up to 30 minutes of video in a single inquiry.

    3. Amazon Nova Pro: A highly proficient multimodal model that can handle up to 300K input tokens.

Additionally, Amazon is developing another model, the Amazon Nova Premier.

As the company’s “most advanced multimodal model for intricate reasoning tasks,” Amazon plans to release Nova Premier in “early 2025.”

    Background

Amazon Web Services has unveiled Nova,to revolutionize cloud-based generative technologies.

Nova represents Amazon’s strategic response to the AI innovation race led by tech giants like Google and OpenAI.

The suite of AI models aims to provide businesses with advanced generative capabilities across text, image, and video generation, leveraging AWS’s robust cloud infrastructure and machine learning expertise to deliver enterprise-grade AI solutions.

Amazon’s future AI plans and partnerships

In 2025, Amazon aims to launch a speech-to-speech model and a “native multimodal-to-multimodal” model.

These innovations were revealed at the AWS reinvent conference currently underway in Las Vegas.

Additionally, Amazon disclosed its collaboration with Anthropic, in which it has invested $8 billion, to create a vast AI compute cluster powered by Trainium 2 chips. Upon completion, it is anticipated to be the largest AI compute cluster ever reported, available for Anthropic to develop and implement its advanced models, as per Amazon.

Amazon is also enhancing Alexa with AI capabilities. Although the voice assistant was expected to debut this fall, its release has been postponed to the following year.
